Definition of Mature Applicant and Closing Dates
Normally mature applicants should be 23 years old on or before 1st January in the year of entry (e.g. 1st January 2024 for admission in Autumn 2024) and must apply by 1st February 2024. However, some HEIs may have a different age requirement, different definitions of mature applicants, etc., and some will consider applications received after the 1st February closing date.

Application Procedure
Mature applicants to nursing/midwifery courses and/or mature entry to primary teaching are not required to follow this application process UNLESS they are also applying to other course codes and wish to be considered on the grounds of mature years for those courses.
In order to be considered on the grounds of mature years, you MUST do the following:
  • Complete the online application process.
  • Post the following supporting documentation to the CAO:
    • Evidence of any qualifications that you have indicated in your online application. This must include a certified translation of official documents not written in English.
    • If there is insufficient space within certain sections of the online application, you may supplement these sections by including additional pages and post these to CAO along with any supporting documents such as copies of certificates etc.
    • Any documentation required by each of the institutions to which you are applying. Details of same are available from www.cao.ie/mature. Please note that there can be different requirements for each institution. Institutional requirements can also vary by course. Please ensure that you check this detail carefully.
    • If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of competency in the English language. You should check with the relevant institution(s) to determine the types of evidence acceptable.
