You should check the email address on your CAO account is correct. Also check the "Junk" or "Spam" folder in your email account and mark CAO emails as "not junk" or "not spam".
All emails sent to you by CAO will be recorded in the correspondence section of your CAO Account.To check for emails from CAO, log in to your CAO account via My Application and go to 'View Communications History' in the Correspondence section. -

How do I get a current year CAO Application Number?
If you wish to apply to CAO and receive a 2025 CAO Application Number, click on the button "Apply" from the CAO menu to start your application.
Once you have submitted an application you will receive your CAO Application Number by email. It will be sent to the email address you used to register with CAO (please check your junk/spam folders in that email account). Your 8 digit CAO Application Number will start with '25'.
You will need to quote your application number in all communications with CAO. In addition, you will need your application number to log on to your online CAO account ("My Application"). You will find your CAO Application Number on any e-mail or statement that you receive from CAO. -
How can I obtain my Leaving Certificate examination number?
Leaving Certificate examination numbers can be obtained from your school or the State Examinations Commission (www.examinations.ie). -

You can add/edit your examination details via the Qualifications and Assessment section of your CAO account (when it is permitted to do so – see dates in Q5 above).
Prior year results should be entered under the "2006-2024 GCE A/AS and/or GCSE Examination Details:" table. You must also supply evidence of any prior year results by upload or post.
Current year examination data must be entered under the "GCE A/AS Level examinations TO BE TAKEN:" table.
Documents supplied must be produced by the Exam Board (i.e. they must show the exam board logo) and must be certified photocopies.
A certified photocopy means that you photocopy the documents and then bring both the originals and the photocopies to an acceptable person or body (School, University, Police Station, Admissions Office, Notary) where they will stamp the photocopy as being a true copy of the original.
You must retain original copies of your transcripts or certificates as you may be required to present these to HEIs in advance of registration. Failure to present the required documents upon request of a HEI may result in a HEI withdrawing an offer of a place or declining to register you as a student. -

I have completed GCE/GCSE exams previously, where do I enter my results?

You MUST upload or post to CAO certified A4 photocopies (certified by school stamp) of the appropriate certificates for any GCE/GCSE examinations which you have already completed and for which a certificate has been issued - these will be required as part of meeting minimum entry requirements for consideration for entry to courses. Results printed on school headed paper will not suffice. It is not acceptable to fax or e-mail examination results. I have been displaced by the war in Ukraine and granted Temporary Protection in Ireland, how do I apply for higher education?
All applicants who have been displaced by the war in Ukraine and who have been granted Temporary Protection in Ireland, are eligible to apply via CAO . Whether you are presenting the Irish Leaving Certificate or other qualifications, you should refer to the Qualificiations and Assessments section of the CAO Handbook for further information. Please pay particular attention to section 5 ‘Other school leaving exams’. Documents not printed in English must be accompanied by an official translation by a professional translation service.
In addition to any documents you may be sending to CAO (e.g. your school leaving exam results or other qualifications), it is also necessary to provide a certified copy of your Temporary Protection document, which was issued to you by the Irish Department of Justice. This document should be sent no later than 12 days before the relevant offer round, but ideally before July 1st, 2025.
If you do not hold Temporary Protection in Ireland, you should contact the institution(s) to which you have applied, to get clarification on the correct application procedure.

In order to cancel a CAO application you must download a Cancellation form. Ensure you have read and understand the form fully before sending your request to CAO. -

If you wish to receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your documents, you must include a stamped-addressed postcard or envelope with your mailing. CAO will return this postcard/envelope on receipt but please note that CAO is not in a position to check supporting documents for correctness and completeness.
CAO will scan your documents electronically and you will have an opportunity to view them online via the 'My Application' section of the CAO web site (by the end of April for documents received by the end of March).
Documents received after the end of March are processed and added to accounts on a fortnightly basis. If you have sent documents to arrive after 31st March, you must check your account no later than 30th June to ensure they have been uploaded.
Please note: HEAR and/or DARE documentation is not available to view via 'View Supporting Documents'. -

I applied to CAO before, do I need to resend my documents for my new application?
If you applied to CAO in a prior year and you wish to reapply for 2025, you must make a new application in full i.e. you must complete the application form, pay the application fee, and supply any additional information/documentation required.
Documents from a previous CAO application cannot be transferred to a new CAO application. -
I need evidence of my application to CAO.
As proof of application, you may use a copy of the acknowledgement recorded when you applied to CAO, entitled `CAO Application Account activated`. This is your receipt of application and can be found in the Correspondence section of your online CAO account. -
I have a Department of Education Exemption from taking Irish in secondary school - what do I need to do?
If you have been granted an exemption from completing Irish at secondary school by the Department of Education, it will still be necessary to follow the steps outlined at cao.ie/exemptions in order to obtain an exemption from Higher Education Institution minimum entry requirements.
A school exemption will not be sufficient.
