Exemptions from Minimum Entry Requirements
Some HEIs have language matriculation requirements. If you are seeking an exemption from minimum entry requirements such as Irish (ROI applicants only) or a third language you must do the following:
  • If applying to TCD, University of Limerick and Mary Immaculate College you must contact the Admissions Office directly
  • In the case of NUI institutions*, you must contact the NUI (see www.nui.ie for details).

Please note:
  • CAO plays no role in processing exemption applications. Apply for exemptions without delay, see here for deadlines and further information.
  • Having an exemption from studying a language in school will not suffice - you will still be required to apply for an exemption from the minimum requirement for entry to Higher Education courses.
  • When you receive your Statement of Application, please log in to your CAO account to check that your exemption has been recorded on your account. If not, you must notify CAO immediately via the Correspondence Section of your account.

*Member institutions of the NUI (i.e. UCC, UCD, Maynooth University, NUI Galway, RCSI and NCAD) have a requirement for Irish (ROI applicants only) and may also have a third language requirement for certain courses (e.g. French, German, Spanish, etc - check institution literature for exact requirements).
