Advice for applicants sending supporting documents to CAO If you are required to send supporting documents to CAO as part of your application, here are some tips to help you understand what is required: [more...] Evidence of qualifications listed on your application
In respect of examinations already completed, you must supply to CAO certificates for all qualifications you mention on your application form:
- Certificates/transcripts should be supplied in their original language and should show dates, subjects and results. They should NOT be originals (except for Graduate Medicine where original transcripts of results for all years are required); they should be certified A4 photocopies – certified typically by a school stamp, a HEI stamp or a Notary’s stamp. (CAO will not return original documents.)
- A certified English translation is required in the case of qualifications not issued originally in English or Irish, in addition to the certified A4 photocopies of the documents themselves.
- If your documentation is in a different name, e.g. by marriage or deed poll, then a certified copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll must also be provided. CAO cannot check that the documents supplied meet with the requirements of the institutions.
Where transcripts/certificates are required to support your application, please do not send the original. You must send certified photocopies as these documents will not be returned to you. In order to obtain a certified photocopy of a document you can bring the original document and a photocopy to a recognised secondary school, the Admissions Office of a CAO-participating Higher Education Institution (HEI), or a Notary to have the photocopy officially stamped. What is a certified English translation?
If you are submitting documents in languages other than English or Irish, you must also submit a formal, certified translation carried out by a professional translation service – for advice on where to obtain such a service you can contact your relevant Embassy in Ireland (if you are currently living in Ireland) - if you are not living in Ireland you should contact the institution awarding the transcript for a recommendation. The translation document must accompany the certified photocopy of the original document. What level of English language proficiency is required?
Individual institutions require different levels of English language proficiency – for advice on English language requirements please e-mail the Admissions Office of the institution(s) that you wish to apply to. Contact details for Admissions Offices are available here. An entry requirements criteria document for EU/EFTA Applicants is available here. Please note: The matriculation and English language requirements contained in the EU/EFTA document are the minimum and will be higher for certain courses and in certain institutions – e-mailing the Admissions Office of the individual institutions is advisable. Supporting documents for Supplementary Admissions Routes (e.g. HEAR/DARE or Access Programmes)
For HEAR or DARE applicants please go to www.accesscollege.ie for details of supporting document requirements.
For Access programmes in institutions not participating in the HEAR or DARE schemes you must contact the Admissions Office of the institutions directly. What about posting the documents?
When sending supporting documents to CAO please write your CAO Application number on the front of each page and obtain a certificate of posting from the post office (free service). If you wish to receive confirmation from CAO that your documents have been received you must include a self-addressed and stamped postcard listing details of all of the documents enclosed in your mailing - you do not need to enclose a stamp if you are residing outside of the Republic of Ireland. All documents should be sent to: CAO, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway, Ireland. Are my documents too late?
Documents arriving within seven days of the 1st February closing date will be considered as having arrived on time. Do not delay starting your CAO application due to outstanding issues or missing documentation – make sure to apply by 1st February at 5:15 pm. 30/01/2017
Take note of restrictions if you are applying to CAO Applicants applying to CAO are advised to take note of the restrictions in advance of the main CAO deadline of 1st February at 5:15pm. [more...] Interested in applying for a restricted course?
Applicants applying for restricted courses must have applied to CAO by the 1st February deadline and included the course(s) on their application by this date. In general, you cannot introduce a restricted course using the ‘Late Application’ or ‘Change of Mind’ facility so you must apply to CAO and include the restricted course on your application by 1st February at 5:15pm (there are some exceptions – see the CAO Handbook). If you register on the CAO system by 1st February at 5:15pm, but you forget to list a restricted course on your application, you can introduce the course for a fee of €10 using the ‘Change of Course Choices’ facility which is accessible via the ‘My Application’ section of the CAO website from 6th February to 1st March at 5:15pm. Are you a restricted-category applicant (e.g. Mature/HEAR/DARE applicants)?
You are considered a restricted-category applicant if you are applying to CAO on the basis of mature years (Mature Applicant) or if you wish to apply for the HEAR or DARE schemes. Such applicants must have applied to CAO by 1st February at 5:15pm. In the case of mature applicants some exceptions apply; in general, institutions will be conducting mature applicant assessments and interviews during spring so applying by 1st February at 5:15pm will be a requirement for many. The majority of applicants applying on the basis of mature years are required to complete mature applicant sections 1-11 of the CAO online application form and must submit supporting documents to CAO within seven days of the 1st February closing date. Applicants applying for HEAR or DARE schemes must apply to CAO by 1st February at 5:15pm; fully complete the online HEAR or DARE application forms by 1st March at 5:15pm; and submit supporting documents to CAO by 1st April at 5:15pm – for more information on HEAR or DARE and the supporting documents required go to www.accesscollege.ie. CAO Change of Mind Deadline - 1st July at 17:15 Please remember to follow the golden rule of placing all of your courses in genuine order of preference and you will be offered the course highest up on your preference list that you are deemed entitled to, if any. You should avoid making changes to your order of preference or course choices based on how you feel you have performed in your examinations. [more...] Please use this time before the deadline to check the following:
- That all of the course codes you have listed are correct and in your order of preference.
- When entering new courses, or editing existing course choices, you must list ALL courses on the new choices list - you should also check the minimum entry requirements and any restrictions that apply.

Check your Statement of Application Record carefully before it is too late All CAO applicants will receive a Statement of Application Record this month. This is an extremely important document. [more...] What to look out for on the Statement of Application Record:
- Check the information on the Statement of Application Record and follow the instructions on it.
- Do not assume course choices are correct – check course codes against CAO handbook and ensure they are in the desired order of preference.
- Ensure that you provide details of any exams being taken this year or any exams taken in previous years. All examinations must be shown.
- Is your Examination Number Correct – Do not assume that it is, check it against the numbers supplied by your school or other authority.
- If you are seeking exemption from minimum entry requirements such as Irish or a third or modern language you must contact the admissions office of the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) you are applying to (in the case of NUI institutions contact the NUI, see www.nui.ie for details).
- If you have been granted exemption from the NUI Irish (and/or third language) requirement and there is no reference to it on the Statement of Application Record please notify us immediately.
- Please check that your personal details are correct.
If there is any error or omission on the Statement, please notify us immediately so as to ensure that you will not suffer any inconvenience at a later stage. Do not wait until August to notify us of errors or omissions as it may be too late to do anything about them at that stage. 15/04/2015

Statement of Application Record
We will send a Statement of Application Record to all applicants in May. You must check the statement carefully and contact us if anything is incorrect or amiss. We will also contact you by email and text, so please regularly check the email account that you provided on your application.
Advice for applicants sending supporting documents to CAO If you are required to send supporting documents to CAO as part of your application, here are some tips to help you understand what is required. [more...] Evidence of qualifications listed on your application
In respect of examinations already completed, you must supply to CAO certificates for all qualifications you mention on your application form:
- Certificates/transcripts should be supplied in their original language and should show dates, subjects and results.
- They should NOT be originals (except for Graduate Medicine where original transcripts of results for all years are required); they should be certified A4 photocopies – certified typically by a school stamp, a HEI stamp or a Notary’s stamp. (CAO will not return original documents.)
- A certified English translation is required in the case of qualifications not issued originally in English or Irish, in addition to the certified A4 photocopies of the documents themselves.
- If your documentation is in a different name, either by marriage or deed poll, then a certified copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll must also be provided.
Individual institutions require different levels of English language proficiency – for advice on English language requirements please email the Admissions Office of the institution(s) that you wish to apply to. Contact details for Admissions Offices are available at www.cao.ie
An entry requirements criteria document for EU/EFTA Applicants is available here: http://www2.cao.ie/downloads/documents/Guidelines-EU-EFTA.pdf
Please note: The matriculation and English language requirements contained in the EU/EFTA document are the minimum and will be higher for certain courses and in certain institutions – emailing the Admissions Office of the individual institutions is advisable. Supporting documents for Supplementary Admissions Routes
All documents should be sent to:
CAO, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway, Ireland.
Documents should arrive in CAO offices seven days after you submit your CAO online application – documents arriving within seven days of the 1 February closing date will be considered as having arrived on time.
Do not delay starting your CAO application due to outstanding issues or missing documentation – make sure to apply by 1 February at 5:15pm. 29/01/2015
Take note of restrictions if you are applying to CAO Applicants applying to CAO are advised to take note of the restrictions in advance of the main CAO deadline of 1 February at 5:15pm. [more...] Interested in applying for a restricted course? Applicants applying for restricted courses must have applied to CAO by the 1 February deadline and included the course(s) on their application by this date. In general, you cannot introduce a restricted course using the ‘Late Application’ or ‘Change of Mind’ facility so you must apply to CAO and include the restricted course on your application by 1 February at 5:15pm (there are some exceptions – see the CAO Handbook). If you register on the CAO system by 1 February at 5:15pm, but you forget to list a restricted course on your application, you can introduce the course for a fee of €10 using the ‘Change of Course Choices’ facility which is accessible via the ‘My Application’ section of the CAO website from 5 February to 1 March at 5:15pm. Are you a restricted-category applicant (e.g. Mature/HEAR/DARE applicants)? You are considered a restricted-category applicant if you are applying to CAO on the basis of mature years (Mature Applicant) or if you wish to apply for the HEAR or DARE schemes. Such applicants must have applied to CAO by 1 February at 5:15pm. In the case of mature applicants some exceptions apply; in general, institutions will be conducting mature applicant assessments and interviews during spring so applying by 1 February at 5:15pm will be a requirement for many. The majority of applicants applying on the basis of mature years are required to complete mature applicant sections 1-11 of the CAO online application form and must submit supporting documents to CAO within seven days of the 1 February closing date. Applicants applying for HEAR or DARE schemes must apply to CAO by 1 February at 5:15pm; fully complete the online HEAR or DARE application forms by 1 March at 5:15pm; and submit supporting documents to CAO by 1 April at 5:15pm – for more information on HEAR or DARE and the supporting documents required go to www.accesscollege.ie. For more information about restrictions read the CAO Handbook and visit the following page of the CAO website: http://www.cao.ie/index.php?page=restrictions 20/01/2015
Make changes to your application up to 31 January for no extra charge For those of you who have already applied to CAO online, you have up to 31 January to enter your course choices. [more...] If you have already entered your courses but you wish to add, remove or change the order of your choices, you can revisit your application using the `My Application` facility as many times as you like up to 31 January. There is no charge for this service. If you wish to apply for a restricted course you must include this course code on your application form now – it will be too late when the Change of Mind facility opens on 5th May. A lot of restricted courses have assessments and interviews which can start as early as February so if you are undecided at the moment, but think you might be interested in a restricted course, you should include it before the deadline – you can always remove it later with the Change of Mind facility. If after the 1st February you have omitted a restricted course and wish to add it, you can avail of the Change of Course Choices facility from 5th February to 1st March at 17:15, however a fee of €10 applies. With the exception of restricted-category applicants - and applications for restricted courses - you will have the opportunity to change your mind for free as many times as you like from 5th May to 1st July at 17:15; your current decision does not have to be your final one. Please remember though, for many applicants May and June will be busy months, and it may be easier to focus on researching your courses sooner rather than later when you don’t have the added pressure of examinations. Some important points when choosing your courses:
- Complete all ten choices on the Level 8 and Level 7/6 list. This is not compulsory, but it will give you more options at offer season.
- Place your course choices in genuine order of preference, with your preferred course as your number one, your second favourite as number two, and so on. Do not order your courses based on what you think the points will be, or how well you think you will do in your examinations.
- Make sure that you fully understand the course content for the courses that you are applying for, and make sure that you meet the minimum entry requirements. It is important to note that even if you get the points for your chosen course you will not get offered a place if you don’t have the minimum entry requirements.
CAO Office will re-open on 2nd January The CAO office will close at 5pm on 23rd December and will re-open on 2nd January at 9.30am. Don’t forget to enter your course choices by 31st January! For those of you that have already applied to CAO online, you have up to 31st January to enter your course choices. [more...] If you have already entered your courses but you wish to add, remove or change the order of your choices, you can revisit your application using the `My Application` facility as many times as you like up until 31st January. There is no charge for this service. If you wish to apply for a restricted course you must include this course code in your application now – it will be too late when the Change of Mind facility opens in May **. A lot of restricted courses have assessments and interviews which can start as early as February, so if you are undecided at the moment, but think you might be interested in a restricted course, you should include it before the deadline – you can always change it later with the Change of Mind facility. If after the 1st February you have omitted a restricted course and wish to add it, you can avail of the Change of Course Choices facility from 5th February to 1st March at 17:15, however a fee of €10 applies. With the exception of restricted category applicants - and applications for restricted courses - you will have the opportunity to change your mind for free as many times as you like from 5th May to 1st July at 17:15; your current decision does not have to be your final one.
** You may be able to apply for a restricted course after the 1st March Change of Course Choices deadline if you have already applied for a different restricted course with identical assessment procedures. You will need to consult the HEI directly to discuss if this is possible.
