COVID-19 update

Please Note: Office contact hours are 09:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday.
The answer to your query may be included in the following list of frequently asked questions.

  1. Where do I send my documents?
If you are required to supply documentation to support your application you must post your documents to CAO, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway, Ireland.

More detailed instructions can be found here.

There is no upload facility on the CAO website and documents are not being accepted electronically.
  2. I cannot get a stamp for my examination documents because my school is currently closed, what should I do?
If you cannot obtain a stamp on a document, send what you have without a stamp - you may receive a request for a stamped copy or sight of the original at a later stage.

If your query is in relation to submitting DARE documentation, please click here.
  3. The grading process for my examination has changed, will this affect my CAO application?
If the grading process for your qualification has changed due to pandemic restrictions, we expect that grades issued by examining authorities will be treated as normal.
  4. My examination results will be later than expected, what should I do?
CAO and the HEIs understand that there is much uncertainty at the moment. The best advice we can give is to send any evidence you have of relevant results now and send any further results as soon as you receive them. If you cannot obtain a stamp on a document send what you have without a stamp - you may receive a request for a stamped copy or sight of the original at a later stage.
  5. I am an EU/Other School Leaving Applicant what documents do I need to send?
Applicants are generally required to supply a certified copy of their final school leaving examination results as soon as they are available. Documents not printed in English must be accompanied by an official translation.
You may also be required to supply proof of English language proficiency.
If you have further queries in relation to English Language proficiency, please see HEI websites or contact HEIs directly. HEI contact details can be found here.

If you are sitting your examinations this summer, you do not need to supply your documents within ten days of applying, but you must supply the certified photocopies of your results as soon as they are available to you. For entry requirements criteria for EU/EFTA applicants, please click here.

Please note: Candidates born and fully educated outside the Republic of Ireland who are presenting qualifications other than the Leaving Certificate for matriculation are automatically exempt from Irish and do not need to make application to NUI.
  6. I have a query about my HEAR/DARE application.
DARE/HEAR instructions for documents are available here (further instructions will be given in the relevant sections of your CAO account when you have entered your information).

Do not leave your DARE and/or HEAR application and documentation to the last minute.
  7. I am applying for medicine can you tell me about the application process for this year?
For entry to medicine the instructions for documents are available here.
  8. I sat the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations in November, what happens now?
Information for applicants who sat the Leaving Certificate examinations in November is available here.
  9. When will CAO offers issue this year?
The CAO offers and acceptances schedule will be published on the CAO website when a date is agreed (by the State Examinations Commission) for the release of the 2021 Leaving Certificate examination results.
  10. Have you received my documents?
If you wish to receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your documents, you must include a stamped-addressed postcard or envelope with your mailing. CAO will return this postcard/envelope on receipt but please note that CAO is not in a position to check supporting documents for correctness and completeness. CAO will scan your documents electronically and you will have an opportunity to view them online via the 'My Application' section of the CAO web site (during the first two weeks of April for documents received by mid-March and in the first two weeks of July for late applications). (*DARE HEAR documents will not be available to view in your CAO Account)
  11. I cannot obtain a translation of my certificates due to the lockdown in my country, what should I do?
Please submit your certified photocopy of the original certificate with a note stating that the translation service is currently unavailable to you. Please submit your certified translation as soon as the service becomes available to you. Do not forget to include your CAO application number on the front of all documentation sent to CAO.
  12. I am applying to the NUI for an exemption but I cannot get my forms signed by my school due to school closures, what should I do?
NUI understands that in present circumstances it may not be possible for applicants to have their application forms signed in school (where applicable).
NUI will continue to accept applications for exemptions, even if unsigned, and will process these fully where the documentation is complete.
A verification process will be undertaken with schools later, as necessary.
  13. I am restricting my movements due to Covid-19 and cannot get to the post office with my supporting documents, what should I do?
If you were unable to submit your documents by a published deadline because you were restricting your movements due to Covid-19, please contact us via the Correspondence Section of your account for further instructions.
